Dozens of suppliers are offering commercial license plate recognition-based solutions. The close coupling of their plate recognition engines with specific end-user tools limits those systems to one or two essential applications. Too often, such rigid product architecture is not sufficiently flexible to address novel and evolving needs, nor to take advantage of advances in modern hardware image acquisition and processing technologies.

Now, a new generation of software is debuted: VisioCar, offers a robust, transportable, automatic license plate recognition (LPR) capability, designed exclusively for system integrators, value-added resellers, and volume end-users. VisioCar is built entirely on industry-standard modules and incorporates features that make it easy to:

• Integrate into a larger solutions-oriented system;
• Modify for unique installation scenarios;
• Adapt to emerging or changing applications;
• Incorporate advances in commodity processor technology;
• Read a rich variety of image formats--on-line and off-line--in color and monochrome;
• Apply optical character recognition (OCR) capability;
• Use, and independent of plate character font and image resolution.

VisioCar runs under the ubiquitous Microsoft Windows operating system environment. Coded in C++, the software takes advantage of the Microsoft DirectShow interface to provide compatibility with a wide range of digitizers. The DirectShow interface enables VisioCar to access specialized hardware functionality without the need for customized code, optimized sub-routines, or arcane image file formatting.
